The Danish West Indies joined the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1877 and thereby requested to introduce stamps fulfilling the UPU requirements for international letters. As the Danish West Indies at that time was as part of the Danish kingdom it was decided to introduce arms type stamps. As both the county name and the currency and values needed to be changed new drawings was made.  The new drawings were made by Johan Christian Danielsen, who also took care of the engraving of the necessary postmarks.

The 1 cent green and 5 cents blue were issued in 1900 12 years after the first arms type stamp has been introduced in Denmark.
